The Ultimate New Year's Resolution

By Kevin B. Bullard

With the advent of each new year comes an exhaustive list of resolutions. They often look like this:

  • I resolve to lose 10-15 pounds by December
  • I resolve to exercise 3 days each week
  • I resolve to read 12 novels this year
  • I resolve to go back to school this year
  • While making resolutions for different areas is good; there is an ultimate resolution to make that will help you follow through on every other resolution.

The resolution? TGIF: Today, God is First.

Businessman and author Os Hillman has written a book with this title. The premise is simple: Before I begin today’s business or ministry activities, God is first. Before I pray for, counsel, or meet with anyone, God is first.

Robert Murray McCheyne, a 19th century Scottish preacher said it simply yet convincingly:

“I ought to pray before seeing anyone. Often when I sleep long, or meet with others early, it is eleven or twelve o’clock before I begin secret prayer. This is a wretched system. It is unscriptural. Christ arose before day and went into a solitary place. Family prayer loses much of its power and sweetness, and I can do no good to those who come to seek from me. My conscience feels guilty, my soul unfed, my lamp not trimmed. Then, when in secret prayer, the soul is often out of tune. I feel it is far better to begin with God – to see His face first – to get my soul near Him before it is near another.”
