mission
Higher Ground Online is not just a website. It is part of a movement occurring throughout the world today. As we enter a new era in time, changes in every facet of life are occurring every day. New ideas, thoughts and overall creativity is coming to the forefront once again. Many old ideals and ways of thinking are being revealed as archaic and are no longer relevant in today’s global society. We are here to encourage and assist in that movement.

Our mission here is simple; to provoke thought and discussion. Far too many of our fellow citizens follow along and agree with exactly what is presented to them by the media and society as a whole. We want to encourage that which is outside of the norm, while still being universally relevant. We have no hidden agendas or affiliations. We are only here to bring a small amount of light where there is darkness, to awaken the dormant and to free the enslaved within a creative construct. We hope and pray that many of you join us in this effort.

history
Sometimes it is hard to understand that everything in life happens for a reason. Just when you think the road will be smooth, a hurdle will place itself in front of you that you may not have the ability to jump with one attempt. However when you look back on that hurdle, you appreciate why the obstacle presented itself, and such is the case with our website highergroundonline.com.

Highergroundonline.com is a site that has gone through a lot of changes and has had to jump quite a few hurdles. The concept for highergroundonline.com is roughly 16 months old. Our original date to launch was to be September 2001, but in all honesty we just were not ready. And after the terrorist attacks on September 11th, we really lost focus of our dream. Nevertheless, we are here now but not without a story.

Highergroundonline’s core consists of two people; Gerald Alston and Leonard Jackson. We went to the same college around the same time, ran in some of the same circles and even bumped heads in terms of interacting with the same females. However we did not meet until years after we had both graduated. I would say that it was the love of music that birthed our friendship. One day my roommate forwarded me an e-mail with a very interesting discussion pertaining to hip hop, I would later find out that the moderator of these e-mails was Gerald. You see, Gerald used to do send out an e-mail everyday to a dozen or so people with a verse or two that he thought needed to be read and he titled the e-mails ‘The Daily Flow.’ The e-mails turned into a miniature forum where people would go back and forth all day long about various topics regarding music and many times the conversations turned into questions about life. Upon being added to this list so that I could receive these e-mails daily, we quickly saw that we had a lot in common in terms of musical taste. Little did we know back then that these simple email messages would be the foundation of this site. The rest, as they say, is history.

In the beginning, had it been up to me, this particular site would have never been created. Around the time ‘The Daily Flow’ was circulating through e-mail systems, I was brainstorming a website of my own that I was going to title ‘rap4real.com.’ My focus for that site was going to strictly relate to music, and more specifically to hip-hop music. Well, it is sad to say that between graduate studies, work, being in a relationship and trying to maintain a personal life, the site never launched any further then my hard drive. About a year and a half went by and I decided to approach Gerald about doing a collaborative site that would cover a full gamut of topics. He agreed and he decided to name the site ‘higherground.com’ with the intent of showing the world a different perspective of the everyday life that was neither “mainstream” or “underground,” but actually above labels and categories. We wanted to take people to a ‘higher ground,’ meaning a higher level of consciousness. Well unfortunately ‘higherground.com’ was already taken, so we had to go with highergroundonline. It is our aspiration to share various views of life, love, music, sports and any other subject manner, as well as for you, as part of our global family, to share your thoughts with us as well as the rest of the world. It is this way that we all can evaluate our minds and souls. Are you ready to go to a ‘higher ground?’

Peace and Love to All.
